Refried beans are an essential part of any Mexican meal. This easy refried black beans recipe takes no time at all to make and is so good you'll be eating it straight from the pan.
There's an amazing Mexican restaurant not far away from our house that does delicious veggie burritos to take away.
Even better than the burritos though are the black beans.
I could eat them for dinner on their own with a spoon, straight out of the pot. Mmmm.
How to make refried beans kid-friendly
Refried beans can be kid-friendly with just a few adaptations.
Go easy on the salt and chilli and you'll have a bean dish that even babies can eat.
Of course, if you aren't cooking for children then you can make this as spicy as you like.
How to serve refried beans
One of my favourite ways to serve refried beans is to make a bean and cheese quesadilla.
If you'd like to try this simply:
- place one tortilla (wrap or flatbread) on a hot dry frying pan
- cover one half with refried beans and grated cheese (I use vegan cheese)
- fold in half and cook for a minute
- carefully flip with a spatula to cook the other side.
Other dishes that go well with refried beans include:
- Mexican rice
- guacamole
- baked potatoes
- sweet potato wedges
- corn fritters
Ingredients
To make refried beans you will need the following ingredients:
- sunflower oil (for frying)
- 1 small onion
- 2 cloves garlic
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1 teaspoon ground coriander
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- ½ teaspoon dried chilli powder (omit for young children)
- 400 g tin of black beans (weight of drained beans 240g)
- Salt and pepper, to taste, optional
Babies and toddlers
This recipe is suitable for both babies and toddlers providing you leave out the salt and chilli powder.
It works well for baby led weaning either on pre-loaded spoons, in quesadilla or perhaps with sweet potato wedges dipped in.
Storing
These beans can be stored in the fridge for up to three days or frozen for up to a month.
Label and date before storing and reheat until piping hot when ready to eat.

- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1 teaspoon ground coriander
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- ½ teaspoon dried chilli powder* optional
- 240 g black beans 1 standard 400g tin
- Salt* and pepper optional
To serve
- Fresh coriander chopped
- Limes cut into wedges
Instructions
- Heat 1 tablespoon sunflower oil in a medium-sized non stick frying pan.
- Add 1 chopped onion, and fry gently over a medium-low heat until soft.
- Stir in 2 cloves crushed garlic, stir and sauté for a minute.
- Then add in the 1 teaspoon ground cumin, 1 teaspoon ground coriander and 1 teaspoon dried oregano, and ½ teaspoon chilli powder* if using stir well and cook for a further minute.
- Add the tin of black beans, with the water they came in, and mash. Cook for 5-10 minutes until you have the consistency of a thick soup*. Add a little more water if it seems too dry.
- Season to taste with salt* and pepper.
- Serve with fresh coriander and lime wedges.
Notes
- I like to leave my refried beans quite soupy. However, if you prefer you can cook for longer so the water evaporates and mash until smooth.
- Omit salt and chilli powder for babies.
