A delicious green smoothie for kids and grown ups alike made with banana, spinach, avocado and oat milk. Full of nutrients and tastes amazing. A great hidden vegetable recipe to try with picky eaters.
It’s taken me so long to find a green smoothie recipe that even one of my kids is willing to try! My toddler had a green smoothie at the Deliciously Ella cafe that he loved but he’s suspicious of homemade smoothies for some reason.
It was my fruit and vegetable hating seven year old that I really wanted to tempt into trying a green smoothie so I tried several versions in his lunch box before finally hitting on a successful version. Well, I say successful. He didn’t exactly love it but he did drink most of it and I think that this version is just delicious.
I have a real pet hate for recipes that say things like “all kids will love this” or “guaranteed to make your picky eater try it”. Real parents of picky eaters know that there’s no such thing as a recipe that all picky eaters will like or even be prepared to try. So I’m not going to say that but I think that this is a great green smoothie for kids and it’s worth a try whether your kid is picky or not.
And if they don’t hopefully you’ll enjoy it yourself anyway!
I made this in my Froothie Optimum Nutri Force Extractor*. The usual price is £179 but at the time of publication is available for just £89. Read my review of the Nutri Force and get a recipe for tropical cauliflower smoothie.
I used our Nom Nom Kids pouches* to give these to the kids. They are like the pouches that you can buy baby food and fruit purées in but they are re-usuable and allow you to make your own homemade smoothies and baby food. They come in two sizes. I bought the larger ones for my kids and I genuinely think that this is a brilliant product.
I make a batch of smoothies and then freeze them to put in my son’s lunch box. I take it out in the morning and it serves a double purpose of acting as an ice pack but is defrosted by lunch time.
Here’s how to make a green smoothie for kids:
- 1 large banana, chopped
- 80g frozen spinach
- 1 ripe avocado, peeled and stone removed
- 1 tbsp hemp hearts (optional)
- 350ml oat milk (almond milk is also delicious)
- Place all the ingredients in your blender.
- Blend until completely combined.
- Serve immediately or freeze for later.
