Spiced carrot soda bread with yoghurt

Full of delicious warming spices and healthy carrots and sultanas this soda bread recipe is perfect for a family teatime treat. The carrots add interesting orange flecks but don't take away from the bready texture.

  • 500 g plain flour
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 tsp ground ginger
  • 1 level tsp bicarbonate of soda
  • 300 ml plain yoghurt
  • 200 ml milk
  • 3 medium carrots grated
  • 100 g sultanas or raisins
  • a handful of oats


  1. Pre-heat the oven to 180°C (fan)/200°C/gas mark 6. Lightly grease a baking tray or line with baking paper.

  2. Put the flour, bicarbonate of soda and spices into a large bowl and whisk until combined.
  3. Stir together the yoghurt and milk. Add to the flour mixture. Stir well then stir in the carrots and sultanas.
  4. Scrape the mixture onto the baking tray shaping it as you wish. Sprinkle with oats. Bake for 45 minutes until golden brown. Eat within a couple of days.
