My kitchen wishlist

We’ve been talking for a while about getting a new kitchen. We don't have enough kitchen storage, the units are looking dated and as a family we’ve outgrown the dining space. Many of the tiles are cracked as various things have been dropped on them over the years - often from over-full cupboards!

We could extend into the side return, which while disruptive and costly would give us a much bigger space to work with.

Alternatively, we'd gain a bit of space by removing a chimney breast and moving our downstairs toilet across the hall and under the stairs. However, the cost and disruption involved in removing the chimney breast is significant – and so our current thinking is that we should focus on the side return, or accept that we need to work with the space that we have.

Our kitchen is very long and thin, which makes it difficult to use the space effectively. When we were a family of four it was fine but now that there are five of us the kitchen table just doesn’t work as well. Baby S’s highchair sticks out into the middle of the kitchen and generally gets in the way.

I've been enjoying looking at kitchen storage ideas online as we try to come to a decision about the best approach for us. Homify have a wealth of kitchen storage ideas on their site – there’s something for every taste. Here are some of my favourites:

I'd love one of these cupboards that pulls outwards - this strikes me as a great way to make the most of the space we have.

Or another alternative would be a floor to ceiling cupboard like this one:

I like how the shelves in this corner unit make the most of the space - plus I love the idea of having blue kitchen units.

We did have some spice racks that went inside the doors of our existing cupboards – but if you shut or opened the door too quickly they’d fall out and smash – not ideal! This looks like a much better solution.

Whether we'll get our new kitchen this year or not remains to be seen but in the meantime here is my kitchen wishlist:

-       More and better designed storage for food

-       Lighter unit colour

-       A work surface that is good for kneading dough and rolling out pastry

-       A clearer worktop for food preparation and cooking

-       Space to have my food processor and stand mixer more easily accessible

-       A large family kitchen table

-       More light – perhaps with another window put in – as a food blogger this is essential!
